Start a Water Restoration Business With No Experience
I was a bag boy, a cook and a call center worker before restoration. Here’s the path I’d follow if I were starting from zero today.
Step 1: Learn how a water job works
Start with the basics: the first call, inspection, extraction, drying, daily readings and getting paid. My free From Leak to Paycheck playbook walks through one job in 7 steps.
Step 2: Get certified
The IICRC WRT is the standard first credential. Adjusters and property managers look for it.
Step 3: Get hands-on time
If you can, help on real jobs before running your own, whether that’s working for a restoration company for a while or partnering with one. Nothing replaces seeing wet walls and readings in person.
Step 4: Set up lean
Business setup, a moisture meter and basic tools. Rent the drying equipment and subcontract labor at first. Check your state’s licensing rules. See what it costs to start.
Step 5: Build referral partners
List 20 property managers, realtors, plumbers and HVAC companies near you. Visit them, ask for a chance on the next leak, and follow up every few weeks. Your first job won’t come overnight, but one good partner can send you work all year.
Step 6: Do the first job perfectly
Clean documentation, daily updates and a fast invoice. Your first job is your audition for every job after it.
