How Restoration Companies Prepare for Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Here’s what to have ready before the first storm.

Equipment and supplies

  • Line up rental sources for air movers and dehumidifiers now. After a storm, everyone wants them at once.
  • Stock moisture meters, protective gear, plastic sheeting, bags and generator fuel safely.
  • Test your equipment and keep a written inventory.

People

  • Know which subcontractors you can call, and agree on rates before the storm.
  • Make sure your own crew’s families have a plan. People can’t work if their own homes aren’t safe.
  • Decide who answers the phone and how calls get logged when volume spikes.

Paperwork

  • Have work authorizations, intake forms and drying logs printed and on your phone.
  • Keep copies of your licenses, certifications and insurance ready to send.
  • Know your state’s rules on post-disaster contracting before the storm, not after.

Your referral partners

Before the season, check in with your property managers, realtors and plumbers. Remind them you’ll answer when the storm comes. The calls you get after a hurricane come from the relationships you built before it.

Protect your own business

Back up your files, keep vehicles fueled, and know how you’ll operate without power or internet for a few days.
