A lot of people think water restoration is only for companies with warehouses full of equipment and big bank accounts. That’s not how I started. I was a bag boy, a cook and a call center worker before restoration, living check to check. I built FL Cleanup with no loans and no investors.
If you’re starting with very little, here’s the honest path.
You don’t need to own the equipment
Air movers and dehumidifiers are the expensive part of water work, and you can rent them while you land your first jobs. The one tool I recommend owning from day one is a moisture meter, because your readings are what prove the job and get you paid. Everything else can be rented until jobs pay for it, one piece at a time.
You don’t need to hire a crew
In the beginning, you can subcontract labor instead of putting people on payroll. That keeps your costs tied to actual jobs instead of a fixed bill every week.
What about insurance?
I ran my first three years doing water jobs with no insurance. Mold jobs and commercial jobs are different, and that’s when you need to get insured. Rules vary by state, so check what applies where you live before you start.
What you can’t skip: the process
Starting lean only works if your process is tight. The people who lose money in this business usually don’t lose it on equipment. They lose it on:
- A weak first phone call that doesn’t set expectations
- Missing photos and moisture readings
- An estimate that gets cut because nothing backs it up
- An invoice nobody follows up on
In restoration, structure beats hustle. Your real tools are communication, documentation and workflow.
Where your first jobs come from
Without an ad budget, relationships are your marketing. Realtors and property managers deal with leaks constantly and need someone dependable. Visit their offices, ask for a chance on the next leak, and then do that job perfectly. Your first job won’t come overnight, but one good property manager can send you work all year.
Start with a system that already works
I made every expensive mistake in my first year so you don’t have to. The 6-Figure Launchpad gives you the step-by-step system built from 5,000+ real water jobs, including a startup budget template, so you can start lean and start right.
